Gasping for Air

Asthma is primarily caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors that result in chronic inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. Risks of improper asthma inhaler use increase in children and people of advanced years, due to the fact that they often have much lower grip strength and less coordination than the average adult.

During an asthma attack, individuals often experience a range of distressing symptoms that can vary in intensity. Breathing becomes difficult as the airways narrow, leading to wheezing, coughing, and a sense of suffocation. Asthma attacks can be accompanied by a sense of fear or panic, as the person gasps for air.

Easing the Squeeze

A team of biomedical engineers and clinicians at UCT teamed up for several months to tackle the issue of getting medication to children and the elderly who may have reduced muscle strength. They came up with an innovative solution – a sleeve that fits over a standard metered-dose inhaler and is safe and easy for kids to use.
