The ZiBiPen

Now introducing the ZiBiPen, an  affordable, simple, and reliable auto-injector. Such a breakthrough can change the way anaphylaxis patients treat their symptoms and will facilitate a safer and more user friendly experience.

What is an Adrenaline auto-injector

Adrenaline Auto-Injector’s are used to self-administer a dose of Adrenaline into patients that are at risk of Anaphylactic shock. Anaphylactic shocks are often induced due to exposure to allergens found in certain foods, medications and insect bites. Anaphylactic shock is characterised by several symptoms including: difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue and loss of consciousness. If not treated immediately, anaphylactic shock can be fatal.

problems with available treatments

Current auto-injector devices for anaphylaxis are often not affordable. This means that middle to lower income groups are unable to afford the Adrenaline Auto-Injectors available in the market to treat symptoms of anaphylaxis. This is exacerbated by the fact that the adrenaline within the device expires and needs to be disposed of annually, meaning that the patient must purchase a brand new device. In addition, available Adrenaline Auto-Injectors do not consider variation in body sizes. For slim patients, the needle is too long and can fracture the femur when being injected whereas for larger patients, the needle is too short and does not reach the muscle, meaning that the device may not be effective. Finally, existing devices present safety concerns to the patient due to unintuitive design, which often results in patients accidentally injecting their fingers.

The solution: the zibipen

To combat these problems, we have developed a reloadable Adrenaline Auto-Injector called the ZiBiPen. The design incorporates a reloadable cartridge mechanism. This allows the patient to replace the expired adrenaline contained within a cartridge as opposed to the entire device. Such an invention will greatly improve affordability, allowing patients in middle to lower income groups to purchase the device. In addition, the replaceable cartridge system allows the patient to choose a cartridge (with attached needle) that can best administer a dose of Adrenaline, accommodating the variation in muscle and fat tissue density. Lastly, the safety cap is removed from the front end of the device with a twist lock, making the design more intuitive and therefore reducing the risk of the patient accidentally injecting their finger.
